All About Table Design

design table

Make sure your table sings on any screen, big or small. When using pagination, include the page number to show how many pages there are and what page the readers are on. Moreover, to provide users with more control, allow them to customize how many rows to view per page.

Unique Table Design Capabilities

Once you have created the basic design table, you can modify it in Excel to control which features you see for each version. The advantage of using the “open in new window” option is that it opens the design table in Excel, making it much easier to edit and move around (see Figure 20). Once I had my basic part, I could bring in the design table. It’s always best to start with the basic geometry already defined because you can then work from that geometry to create your design table. The final ingredient for successful table design requires that every detail be considered from the point of view of how the table will look. To populate the Table Component with real data, connect it to an external data source such as a JSON file, CSV file, or Google Sheet.

How To Design a Table the Right Way: Mastering Data Table Design

Adding a configuration attaches an additional row to the design table. When I have different configurations of a part, I set the Properties as shown in Figure 14. If I suppress new features and mates, this ensures that no changes are made to this specific configuration unless it is active.

Designing better data tables for enterprise UX

The three described below are proven approaches, but others are possible. The original and quintessential function of a table is to provide a flat surface for writing, playing games, eating or working. The form of any given table may be as varied as these uses. So it is of the utmost importance to be clear at the outset about the requirements of the table you intend to design. These include not only structural requirements—so that the table can do its intended job—but also ergonomic requirements. The most exquisite dining table will be a complete failure if it proves too small to sit at.

Regardless of the data, fixed row height improves table UI design and visuals. It also means they can do this without scrolling back and forth. This helps users minimize clutter, digest small pieces of information, and arrange the columns according to their needs. An effective data table works well on different devices.

If you have two (or more) versions of the front panel, you will also need to create the same number of versions/configurations in the assembly. To select a different label configuration, use the drop-down list to identify the preferred configuration (see Figure 27). The Configuration Publisher allows you to take your part one step further and upload it to the SOLIDWORKS 3DContentCentral portal. If you get stuck, or want to check your work, you can find our version on GitHub as timetable-fixed.html (see it live also). The problem here is that, while you can kind of make out what's going on, it is not as easy to cross reference data as it could be. If the column and row headings stood out in some way, it would be much better.

Splitting them into digestible bites with pagination is key. It aids in user-friendly table layouts and isn’t as daunting as it sounds; many content management systems (CMS) offer plugins or modules to make this a breeze. Use flexible units and media queries to ensure your CSS table styles adapt. Remember, mobile-friendly tables aren’t a luxury; they’re a necessity. Think about users who will access your table on-the-go.

For example, location details like address, city, country, and zip code must be together. Placing these apart would create more work for users as they scroll or scan the table to compare columns. Data tables are essential components for many enterprise UX projects. UX designers must find the best UX table design solution to visualize and sort data according to user needs. If you’re dealing with a table with a huge data set, allowing your users to scroll vertically or horizontally can exponentially enhance their experience.

Table styling

Again, the amount of content on the table is the key to deciding which approach to take between pagination and infinite scroll. However, inline editing takes place when you have fewer columns and the editing is simple. Also, the table should have room for save and cancel buttons.

Use our color picker to find different RGB, HEX and HSL colors. We can also right-click on the table and select Save Table to save it externally. You can use it for another part and be able to update it in Excel directly without opening SOLIDWORKS. Keep in mind, you will need to link the external file to the part and link the parameters as well.

After that, click on the “Add state” (command + shift + S / ctrl + shift + S) icon in the horizontal toolbar and then give the new State a name using the “Set state” input field. It’s also possible to make the data sortable using States and Interactions. First, you’ll need to ensure that the Layer names match that of the JSON/CSV/Google Sheet table headers. See the image below to understand how this would work with a Google Sheet. Badges and icons can be used for statuses and user pics.

Great advice too about checking your library first before you commit. I agree with most on this list but was surprised to not see Pierce & Ward’s book. The spaces featured in this book rely heavily on vintage; they feel lived-in and personal and attainable. Plus, the final two chapters – white and black – showcase some really fun, thoughtful, and fresh neutral spaces. Her spaces are maximalist AND uncluttered; bold AND calm; whimsical AND sophisticated. Wonderland is a total masterclass in how spaces come together – if you’ve ever felt nervous or unsure about your design taste or skill, Summer’s words will reassure and embolden you.

Once you have completed your preliminary setup, you can insert a design table. Keep in mind that the larger the assembly, the larger your design table may become and this can slow down your system a great deal. To exit the design table, just left-click anywhere in the display window. The design table auto-fills with the dimension values I selected (see Figure 10). In the next article, we'll look at some slightly more advanced table features, and start to think how accessible they are for visually impaired people.

Another method to visualize table data is to use heatmaps. Inserting a bar chart oftentimes expands the column too much. Thus, consider showing bars only for visualizing important values. Use a featured section to highlight important information in the table. This could be the best value plan or a popular element among a list for example. Otherwise, the column data will not be aligned with each other.

Before I create a Design Table, it’s a good practice to do some model housekeeping. The first thing I want to do is rename the features in the Feature Manager tree from the default names. I’m going to do this by clicking on the feature and hitting F2 on my keyboard. I’m changing Cut-Extrude3 to Shaft Hole and will focus the Design Table on this feature.

Data tables vary in size, complexity, content and purpose. Regardless of use-case all well-designed data tables provide clarity on the information presented and help users make insights and take action. Data table filters help users narrow their preferences to only display relevant entries. This data table example allows users to apply multiple filters to find exactly what they need.
